Let's live in harmony

A father from Sammanthurai speaks about the atrocities of the war

I was born in the village of Sitrandukudi in Batticaloa district. Then my parents moved to Alambadi Vembu village in Akkaraipatru. In Grade 1, I studied in Sinhala in a Sinhala school but after the ethnic unrest, I had to study in a Tamil school. Ours is an old village, where people lived in peace and unity. Because of the conflict in the 90s, those who were studying in the Sinhala school left because of security concerns and and were settled in Ampara. The school stopped functioning. Because of the war, my education was completely lost. It was a loss to all the students. When I went to school again, there was an age difference of 2 or 3 years between me and the other students in Grade 9. I had to leave the school because I was so embarrassed. I learned tailoring and built my life. I loved a girl and married her.
