We have lost a lot

A mother from Musali, Arippu speaks of the struggles her family faced during the war from all parties involved

My birthplace is Vangala. I had 3 sisters and 4 brothers, I am the second daughter. I studied up to O/Ls. I married in 1982 and was happy. One of my younger brothers joined EPRLF, while the other went to India by sea, because he was running into problems with the LTTE and felt unsafe. The LTTE asked for my brothers and arrested my father when they couldn’t be produced. My husband was on good terms with the LTTE so we asked them to release our father. It was very hard, and eventually they all went to India.
