Let's move forward
A fisherman from Nilwella speaks about his experiences from the Tsunami, the JVP insurrection and the civil conflict which prevailed in the country.
From November, December, the Eastern monsoons prevent fishing in these waters. Then our parents generation would go to Pottuvil, Kalmunai, Trincomalee, Sellipiaru to fish. Then they would pack the boats onto lorries and take it over. But fishermen from those areas didn't come here. Not then, not now. This is because, generally people won't allow non-villagers to come into this fishing harbour. Supposing it is someone from Dikwella... even he cannot come here and fish, unless at least he is married to someone from the village. Then he might have rights to fish. There is no such problem for us when we go there. That was always the system.
