Two gentleman from the Sritoppu village speaks about their constant battle for safety during the ethnic conflict and further relates to the needs of the Tamil community in post-conflict Sri Lanka
In the 16th century, a race called “Ambalavana” settled here. Crops and grains were the major cultivation here and there were many cashew gardens. It is all destroyed now. After the water turned salty, the crop cultivation failed and they turned to fishing. They started a fisheries association and started fishing, more than 30 – 40 boats were involved in this business and there was economic improvement. Everyone here were Catholics and according to catholic tradition, there were dances and songs here.
