The floods in 2003
My village Godapitiya (Porvwai) is situated in Akkurassa in the Matara District in the Southern Province. About 13 years ago that is on 18th May 2003, flood affected our area at night. All houses in the low line areas in our village were drowned. The people of this village were sent to higher areas and were safe. Further, there were no deaths. But animals, houses, and properties were destroyed. Relief items for the flood were received from various outside areas. The village school that is the present (junior) school was destroyed by the floods. Further, the senior school too was affected.

මගේ ගම ගොඩපිටිය පිහිටලා තියෙන්නේ මාතර දිස්ත්රික්කයේ අකුරැස්ස ප්රදේශයේ. දැනට අවරුදු 13 කට පමණ කලින් 2003 වසරේ මැයි මාස 18 වැනිදා අපේ ගමට ගංවතුර ගැලුවා පහත් බිම් වැල තිබෙන ගෙවල් ඔක්කොම වතුරෙන් යට වුනා. මිනිසුන් උස් ප්රදේශ වලට ගිහිල්ලා ජීවිත බේරා ගත්තා නමුත් සතුන් සහ ගෙවල් ගංවතුරෙන් විනාශ වුනා. ගමේ ප්රාථමික විදුහල ගංවතුරෙන් විනාශ වුන අතර ජේෂ්ඨ පාසලටත් හානි සදු වුනා

தென்மகாணத்தில் மாத்தறை மாவட்டத்தில் அக்குறஸ்ஸ தொகுதியில் அமைந்துள்ள கிராமமே எமது ஊர் கொடபிடிய எனும் (போர்வையாகும்). இப் பிரதேசத்தில் சுமார் 13 வருடகாலத்துக்கு முன்னர் அதாவது 2003 மே 18ம் திகதி இரவு நேரம் வெள்ளம் பெருக்கெடுத்து எமது கிராமத்திலுள்ள தாழ்ந்த பகுதியிலுள்ள வீடுகள் அனைத்தும் மூழ்கின. அத்துடன் இக்கிராம மக்கள் உயர்ந்த பிரதேசங்களுக்;கு அனுப்பப்பட்டு பாதுகாப்பாக இருந்தனர். மற்றும் மனித உயிரிக்கென்று பெரிதாக எதுவும் நிகழவில்லை. ஆனால் மிருகங்கள், வீடுகள், சொத்துக்கள் என்பன அழிக்கப்பட்டன. வெள்ளத்திற்கான நிவாரணப்பணிகள் பல்வேறு இடங்களிலிருந்து கிடைக்கப் பெற்றன. கிராமத்திலிருந்த பாடசாலை அதாவது தற்போதுள்ள (கனிஸ்ட) வித்தியாலயம் வெள்ளத்தினால் அழிக்கப்பட்டது. அத்துடன் (சிரேஷ்ட) வித்தியாலயமும் அழிக்கப்பட்டது
